No foreign chief guest at Republic Day parade

  • The external affairs ministry confirmed that this year’s Republic Day parade would not have any foreign head of State or government as chief guest owing to the pandemic.
  • This is the fourth time in history that no foreign guest will be present at the Republic Day.
  • The announcement came nine days after British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who was to be the chief guest at the parade, cancelled his visit to India because of the countrywide lockdown in the UK.

HISTORY

  • The last time it had happened was in 1966, and before that in 1953 and 1952.
  • The event in 1966 was held days after the demise of Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri in Tashkent and the death of nuclear scientist Homi Bhabha in an air crash.
