Boris Johnson Cancels Republic Day Visit To India

  • British Prime Minister Boris Johnson cancelled his visit to India.
  • This came some hours after he announced a fresh lockdown in the United Kingdom over the new strain of coronavirus that has affected thousands of people in the UK.
  • The Prime Minister said that it was important for him to remain in the UK so he can focus on the domestic response to the virus.
HISTORY 
  • President Sukarno of Indonesia was guest of honour for India’s first Republic Day celebrations in 1950.
  • Chancellor of the Exchequer R. A. Butler Chancellor of the Exchequer R. A. Butler who was a prominent British Conservative politician was invited in 1956.
  • The last British prime minister at the Republic Day parade was John Major in 1993. (This was the fifth invitation)
