Nepal Prime Minister Oli loses vote of confidence

  • Nepal’s Prime Minister K P Oli has lost the trial of strength in Parliament.
  • The vote of confidence that he placed before the House secured 93 ‘Ayes’ votes against 124 ‘Nos’.
  • There were only 232 members of 271 present in the House.
  • This was the first vote of confidence unsuccessfully sought by the first government elected under the new constitution promulgated in September 2015.
  • Oli will be submitting his resignation to President Bidhya Devi Bhandari who in turn will ask Parliament to explore formation of the new government within a week.
WHY OLI LOST?
  • CPN-UML (Communist Party of Nepal- Unified Marxist Leninist) had 121 seats in Parliament.
  • Its alliance Nepal Communist Party Maoist Centre led by Prachanda withdrew its support to the government, Oli's government was reduced to a minority one.
  • The Nepali PM had asked parliament for a vote of confidence in an attempt to show he still had enough support to stay in power despite an expected second split within his governing party.
WHY OLI LOST DAHAL'S SUPPORT?
  • Oli has refused to allow Dahal to succeed him as prime minister or lead the party, despite an earlier agreement to do so, causing divisions within the party.
  • Oli directed the dissolution of parliament in December and announced new elections this year.
  • The Supreme Court, however, reinstated parliament and canceled the new elections.
