Republic Day 2021

  • This day marks the date on which the Constitution of India came into effect on 26 January, 1950. 
  • The constitution replaced the Government of India Act (1935) as the governing document of India.
  • Republic day is celebrated with a parade on Rajpath in Delhi. 

REPUBLIC DAY 2021

  • This year marked the 72nd Republic Day.
  • The event commenced with Prime Minister Narendra Modi visiting the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate for the wreath-laying ceremony.
  • A wreath laying ceremony is a traditional practice during which funeral wreaths are laid at a grave or memorial site.
  • The parade marched this year was 3.5 km as opposed to earlier distance of 8.5 km 
  • The size of every contingent was also cut short to 96 members instead of 144. 
  • The route of the marching contingent ended at the India Gate C-Hexagon instead of Red Fort.

ARMY CONTINGENTS

  • 90% of the Territorial Army’s contingent comprised of people from Andaman and Nicobar Islands, who came to the mainland for the first time.
  • The only woman contingent commander of the Indian Army at the parade was Captain Preeti Choudhary of 140 Air Defence Regiment, leading upgraded Schilka Weapon system.
  • A contingent from Bangladesh marked the third instance of a military contingent from a friendly foreign nation participating in the parade. 
  • The first was France in 2016, and then UAE in 2017.

REMARKABLE TABLEAUX

  • A total of 32 tableaux marched down Rajpath this year.
  • The tableau of the Department of Biotechnology was presented with the theme of ‘Aatma-Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan: COVID’. 
  • The display of cultural tableaux began with Ladakh leading which was the first-ever tableau of the UT.
  • Tableau of Punjab showcased the glory of 9th Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur – to commemorate his 400th birth anniversary.
  • Uttar Pradesh tableau showcased Ayodha Ram Mandir.
